Who is CrossFit Van Zandt?
CrossFit Van Zandt was founded in 2011 (formally Van Zandt Fitness Co.) in a 1000 square foot retail space. But don’t let our small beginnings underwhelm you. Fast forward five years and 10,900 square feet, and Sam & Ashley's passion for coaching and dedication to the success of athletes has led to the creation of one of the most professional and state-of-the-art CrossFit gyms in the country. At the end of 2016, our CFVZ Community grew substantially with the opening of CrossFit Van Zandt - South in Athens, TX. Our Athens and Canton boxes both have the same programming and membership options so CFVZ'ers may attend any location.
At CFVZ, there are no gimmicks and there is no fancy facade. We are a clean, tidy, and professionally run facility that has everything you need to train hard and nothing more that would distract you from realizing that the combination of hard work, dedication, and community is the only pathway to achievement.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.
Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.
The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.
The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.

How did you guys start?
Sam began to hear about CrossFit while attending West Point but didn't try it until he graduated in 2006. While training at Ft. Hood, TX, Sam's fellow Infantry LT's convinced him to try a workout. They did 21-15-9 Deadlifts and hand release pushups. Long story short: Sam threw up and had a sore back for 2 weeks. He quickly realized he wasn't in as good as shape as he thought and has loved CrossFit ever since. Sam's entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to helping people inspired him to start a fitness business upon leaving the service. The rest is history. Sam's military credentials include: Airborne Ranger qualification, Recon/S Leader, Combat Infantrymen's Badge, and successful leadership roles where training a 39 man platoon in physical fitness was paramount for success overseas.
